So Long and Good Night

My Chemical Romance could probably be considered my favorite band of all time. I owe portions of every album they’ve ever put out, I used to have one of their posters, I’ve even done art projects inspired by their music. There always seems to be one of their song that matches the mood I’m in. It’s kind of magical.

And, yesterday, the magic abruptly… ended. The band is breaking up. They posted a very sweet goodbye to all their fans on their website, explaining that all good things come to an end. At first, I thought it was a prank- just because it was unexpected. But it seems like it’s not. And besides, they’ve always been very professional- I don’t think they’d pull a prank like that.

So, in tribute to the end of one of my favorite bands of all time, here are my top ten favorite songs from My Chemical Romance. Obviously, this is a very personal list, so if you don’t agree with it, feel free to make your own.

10. Welcome to the Black Parade– I loved this song when it first came out (who didn’t, really?) but then it was so overplayed by both the radio stations and me that I just didn’t like it as much anymore. But it’s still an amazing song, and the one that really introduced me to the band.

9. Kill All Your Friends– Aside from the rather disturbing title, I love this song. I love that it’s not too fast, and I actually really like the semi-story that seems to be behind the lyrics- that people really only come together around someone else’s death. It’s not nice, but it is intriguing.

8. Headfirst for Halos– I didn’t like this song at first- but after I heard it a few times, I started to love it. And then I overplayed it a bit, but you know. I still very much like it.

7. Bulletproof Heart– I’m not sure why this song isn’t higher, because there’s nothing I specifically don’t like about it- the guitar, the lyrics, the beat. It seems like it should be, but I guess even though it’s amazing, it’s not exceptional compared to some of the other stuff.

6. The Jetset Life is Gonna Kill You– This song is just epic in its musicality. But I’ve never find the lyrics that great. They just seems kind of generic. But the organ, the guitar riffs, the echoing vocals… sooo amazing. And I will say that “And for the last night I lie, could I lie next to you?” is an awesome lyric.

5. Disenchanted– Ah, my sad break-up song. “I hate the ending myself, but it started with an alright scene.” Plus the acoustic guitar at the beginning is downright gorgeous in it’s simplicity.

4. Na Na Na– Simple, yet awesome. That’s the best way to describe it. I know a lot of MCR fans didn’t like this album in general (or at least a lot of the people I know who like MCR, I’m not doing a scientific study) but I loved it. And Na Na Na is a great workout track, by the way. Gets you all pumped up for kicking ass.

3. Kiss the Ring– This is one of the newest ones, so maybe it’s not reliable to put it this high, but I love it. It’s so freaking awesome. I always imagine a fictional scene when listening to music (I’m a writer, it’s what we do) and with this, it’s always some epic scene where the main focus is just so much awesomer than everyone else in the room.

2. Save Yourself, I’ll Hold Them Back– A song for the zombie apocalypse, truly. But also has awesome lyrics and musically blends really well. This is one of those songs I keep thinking I’m going to over-play but I never seem to.

1. House of Wolves– I don’t understand why this song doesn’t get much love. I adore it. It’s another great workout song, another great imagination stimulus, but it also just brings in everything that I think made MCR great- an imaginative guitar line, a great bass line, fun drums, imaginative lyrics with fantastic imagery (“Get the choir boys around you, it’s a compliment, I swear.”) I can’t get enough of this song.

My Chemical Romance was far more than just another punk band- they were an amazing group of very talented musicians. I always looked forward to their new albums growing up, and hearing their songs often inspired my writing. I hope they all move on to bigger and better things, but a little, petty part of me wants them to recant this, and just make music until I’m dead. But I know that can’t and won’t happen. It’s their band, their decision, and to be fair, at least they aren’t pulling a Simpson’s- if they think it’s best to stop now, then it probably is. I, as a fan, can respect that, even if it kind of breaks my heart.

So long and good night, My Chemical Romance. You’ll be missed.

Flashback: January 2013!

Hello, internet friends! How’d you guys like the Superbowl last night? My team lost, so I’m kind of sad, but at least we didn’t go down without a fight. And Beyonce’s half-time show was AMAZING! I’d forgotten how much I loved some of her stuff, but now I need to go buy it all. And Destiny’s Child was there too! Ah, childhood memories! 🙂
This is my version of a Favorites video, but done a little differently- I would get really bored if all I was doing was talking about material stuff every month, and then you’d get bored of me being bored… it just wouldn’t be good. This video also includes a mini-rant about King of the Nerds/reality television… sorry about that. (Except not really.) It was too entertaining to edit out.
Please subscribe to my channel- I post one video a week, on Mondays! Leave comments, questions, suggestions, and general goofiness down below- I’ll read them!
